Where can you find this 20-foot-tall duck?
Long Island, New York – Tourists who visit eastern Long Island might come across what locals affectionately call the “Big Duck.” The Big Duck is hard to miss — the white, 20-foot-tall, 30-foot-long, 30-ton sculpture is every bit as striking as it is massive. When the structure was built in the 1930s, there were about 90 duck farms on Long Island. Perhaps to set himself apart from the competition, farmer Martin Maurer commissioned the Big Duck in 1931. Maurer made a shop in the duck, selling ducks and eggs from its belly to curious passersby and tourists alike. Before long, the Big Duck became a cultural sensation — so much so that when developers threatened to bulldoze it in the 1980s, locals successfully campaigned for its conservation.
The Big Duck is a huge duck-shaped building. The building measures 18 feet (5.5 m) wide, 30 feet (9.1 m) long and 20 feet (6.1 m) tall to the top of the head. The duck’s eyes are made from Ford Model T tail lights and the interior floor space is confined to 11 feet (3.4 m) by 15 feet (4.6 m). The wood frame, wire mesh/concrete surface building was designed in the shape of a Pekin duck in order to house a retail poultry store.
